In the last decade, the impact of the Internet on our society has been very
deep. It has changed everything from the way we socialize and work to the
way we date and go on vacation. The Internet has expanded from the tool
that enabled us to virtually travel and be in touch with people from the
other side of the ocean, to the tool that enables us to physically travel, with
taxi-hailing services, which are a prime example of how impactful it has
become.
This trend shows no sign of stopping. What lies ahead might be even
more impactful. Nowadays, traditional institutions not only need an online
presence, but need an excellent one, giving to their customers the same
service both online and offline. Traditional institutions that do not do this
will be eventually disrupted by leaner organizations that have the Internet
as their backbone.
User-generated data is also becoming pervasive. Online user reviews
are now a key factor in making decisions on how to spend our time and
money. Online communities are numerous and thriving. Recently there
have been lots of advances in machine learning, and without the strong
presence of the Web as a way to generate data for those systems, this could
not have happened.
